Q - I am wondering, what is counseling like?
A - We just sit and talk in a comfortable and safe place. Your privacy and confidentiality are my top priority. First, we talk about
what brings you to counseling and what your needs are. Then, it will help me to get to know you by asking some questions about
what brought you to this point in your life. Later, we will set some goals about the direction you would like to go and decide together
how to get there.
Q - What do you do as the therapist?
A - My job is to work with you to create a collaborative partnership to reach your chosen goals. My role is to help you discover what
might have gotten in your way in the past and how we can redirect your energy in the future. By focusing on your strengths, we will
develop the skills and strategies that will give you the tools you need to make the necessary changes to get there.
Q - What do I do in counseling?
A - You are a equal and important part of the counseling relationship. Counseling in a partnership happens with you and is not
something done to you. If you can be open to looking where you have been and consider new possibilities about you could go,
there is hope for things to be different. You would be actively participating both in and outside of our sessions as part of the
counseling process. Ultimately, the choice and responsibility for any change belongs to you.
Q - Can counseling really change anything?
A - Yes, change is possible if you are motivated to help things be different. One way to think about change is you can't always
control the deck of cards that you have been dealt, BUT you can decide how to play your cards. It is all about learning new ways to
think and having the tools and strategies to reach your goals.
Q - I don't see the type of counseling that I need listed. How do I know if you do that?
A - I have had training and am experienced in many areas of counseling. Just give me a call or send me a email and we can talk
about what your needs are. If I don't offer the particular type of counseling that you were looking for, I can probably refer you to
several other resources.
Q - How soon can I be seen?
A - Appointments are usually available within 1 to 2 weeks. Day, evening and weekend times are available and can be generally be
worked to fit your schedule. I also offer a cancellation list so if someone else cancels, you can be offered the choice of the open
time slot.
Q - How long will counseling take? I've heard of people going to counseling for years.
A - Adlerian counseling is designed to be short-term and addresses the needs and goals that you have today. Sessions are
usually scheduled once a week but can be adjusted to fit your situation. It is sometimes helpful to see someone more often in the
beginning and less often as counseling continues. For some people, coming bi-weekly is sufficient. The more motivated you are as
a participant may help determine how quickly counseling can go.
Q - Can family members be a part of counseling?
A - Yes, there are two approaches for family members. We can do family counseling to help deal with family issues as a group.
Alternatively, if you are in individual or couples counseling, family members can be brought in for a session or two to deal with
particular issues.
I welcome any questions you may have about individual, couples and family counseling. I offer a 30 minute new client
credit toward your first 80 minute intake session to begin your counseling experience. Call or email me for your
appointment.
