Questions & Answers for Couples
Q - Is Couples Counseling the right step for us?

A - For some couples, attending local seminars and workshops on relationships or reading self-help books may be helpful.  For
others, taking a fresh look at their relationship or marriage in a safe and caring atmosphere may help them make important changes
for improvement.  It may be useful to have a neutral observer listen to issues that you haven't been able to resolve together and
assist in redirecting your focus to finding workable solutions.

Q -  I really don't know how I feel about my partner any more.  Can we get back to the couple we used to be?

A - It is common for couples to get so caught up in their daily obligations, that the priority their relationship once had becomes lost.
You can rediscover what brought you together in the first place, establish a new identity as a couple today and work toward enjoying
what you could be together.

Q - I'm trying to make a decision about our relationship and am not sure what to do.  Can you help me with that?

A - Yes, I often see individuals who are trying to figure out what they would like the direction of their relationship to be in the future.
There can be a confusing array of personal feelings, relationship history and advice from well-meaning friends or family members
that can muddy the water.  I can assist you to identify the issues at hand and provide methods to clarify the decision making process.
Although I will partner with you to help facilitate your journey, the decision itself remains with you.

Q - Our relationship has never been as difficult as it is now.  Can we be helped?

A -  Sometimes relationships can get so stressful that we just stop hearing one another and seem to be going nowhere.  Learning to
truly listen to someone else and understand what they may really mean are first steps of good communication skills and changing the
direction of a relationship or marriage.

Q - We argue constantly about the same things over and over.  Will this ever change?

A - When couples get stuck in a pattern of not giving in, arguments can become endless replays of the same points.  You can learn a
new way of resolving conflicts that will take you in directions that you never would have imagined.

Q - We don't want anyone to know that we are going to counseling.  How private it is?

A - With a Fee-for-Service provider, your identity and records remain completely private and confidential, with certain exceptions by
law.  One way to think about couples counseling is like a tuneup or maintenance for your relationship or marriage, just we do for our
homes, cars or wardrobe.

Q - How long will couples counseling take?  How often will we come to counseling?

A - For some couples, a few sessions may help them resolve a particular issue.  For other couples, it may be helpful to have more
time for difficult issues.  You can choose which approach works best to achieve your goals.  Sessions can be scheduled weekly or
bi-weekly to accommodate your needs.

Q - My significant other will not come to counseling.  What are my options?

A - You are welcome to attend individual counseling for the help and support you may need right now.  Although we can't change
someone else, we can make changes in ourselves that may ultimately benefit the relationship.  Couples Counseling can always be
an option in the future.

Q - Our family life is not at all what we envisioned.  What can we do?

A - Couples may have different ideas about what family life should be like, the roles each partner should have and the raising of
children.  Exploring family backgrounds and cultural influences can be very helpful in understanding why we think the way we do and
forming a new joint vision together.

Q - If we do divorce, how do we and our family adjust?

A - For the couple who ultimately decide to go their separate ways, counseling can help guide the couple through the transition to a
uncoupled lifestyle.  For the couple with children, preparing and assisting each family member with their concerns may help ease the
change process through family counseling.

Q - Will our insurance pay for couples counseling?

A - Insurance may or may not cover the cost of couples or marriage counseling.  Counseling can be a type of investment in the
growth and health of a relationship or marriage.  Please check with your insurance carrier to see whether they provide benefits and
out-of-network reimbursement for a Licensed Associate Marriage & Family Therapist.
